That's actually pretty interesting with that RDG car and the iron ore load.

I'm guessing that's the intent there.

Didn't we just have a big discussion about that business here?

Not ore. Coal. Along the same lines as blue coal.

I'd expect a nastygram from Nscaledivision - they are really nice guys, but they do not like their images being posted in forums!!

If it's iron ore, don't expect those friction bearings to last too long...  55 tons would only be about 1/2 a load...

I know for sure they got some aluminum Magor cars from Frisco, but I'll have to check the series otherwise.

If it's Red it's Reading

Quote
Brand Names of Anthracite

In the heyday of Anthracite mining in Pennsylvania, many of the coal companies branded their coal. This was done as a sales gimmick. One of the most famous branded coals was the Glen Alden Coal Company's "Blue Coal". Often the coal was dyed a color other than black. This dye also served as a lubricant to allow the coal to travel down chutes and bins more easily. When the coal traveled more smoothly, it was less likely to break into smaller pieces. Catchy slogans came with the brand names.

Glen Alden Coal Company
Blue Coal - dyed a blue color "Clean, Safe, Low Cost Heat"

Sterling Brand Coal - dyed a silver color
"Triple-Tested" and "Chemi-Coated'

Gold Nugget Coal - dyed a gold color

Reading Anthracite with "Red Spots Bright" - coal was flecked with red dye
"If it's Red it's Reading"

Now that's a car that'd be a good mention in whatever thread it was on what would be a good car for MT to do. A real northeast container gon. LV, D&H, and NYC all used pretty much the same looking gon and container. And the large rectangular cutouts in the gon to get to the hoses (it was a pressurized delivery system) make them very unique. Wouldn't be surprised if other roads had them also. Or the boxish LCL container that was usually loaded into a standard gon or flatcar? Although that might be better for the Hays Bros folks.

(As an aside, does anyone have a copy of the article on Kitbashing a Lehigh Valley LCL cement container gondola (using Athearn containers and new decals that also provide D&H lettering), by Jim Hertzog, Model Railroader, January 1995.)
