Weekend Update 7-27-2008

Just thought I'd get in first. 

Still working on my SP extended door freight cars. Just awaiting delivery of some decals. While that project is on hold, I thought I might put together an SP C-40-3 caboose I received from Bob.
Just waiting on decals and trucks to arrive from Chulvis. I'll also give the couplers a lick of paint and add some .005" glass to the windows when fully weathered. 



That bit of lint you can see on the side has now been eradicated!

Both. Most of the larger components were soldered. Small fiddly bits received the CA treatment.

put glazing in the windows after weathering.
How is  that done? Is the floor removable?

Here's some shots of the papermill trackage and mill buildings I started this winter, still a lot to do to finish them up but its starting to look like something. The mill is 18" deep and 14' long.

The bars are part of the outer detail layer that is folded over the structural side. The bottom floor is removable to allow access.

I've managed to achieve quite a lot trainwise this week, helped largely by not having to go to work!

The highlights in N are:

I've gone a bit further with my BCR slug project, which now has sand filler hatches, a nose light, correct front and rear pilots, including the wierd cow catcher under the front coupler - made out of brass wire. Sadly the shot of the front is a bit unclear, my small digital camera died and my SLR doesn't havea macro lens.




Finally, I modified, painted, and decalled (this side only) this car:

Finished building the InterMountain NP reefer I'd been looking for for years, and weathered same:



Put an MTL Z scale No. 905 coupler in the pilot beam of my Bachmann Consolidation and will adapt the Reading shell from the old Bachmann 2-8-0 to fit (seems fairly easy).

And before I hear about it...I noticed the bent top handgrab on the left, thanks to its shadow and will straighten it before it enters service.

That stencil signified that the car was inspected for the presence of 33" wheels manufactured by Southern Wheel.  They were known to have defects that could lead to catastrophic failures and subsequent derailments.  A Yellow Dot meant that it didn't have Southern wheels on it, a White dot meant that it did and could only be used in restrictive service until the wheels were replaced.

Those dots began appearing in 1978 and it didn't take long before all cars with 33" wheels (and even some with 36" wheels though it wasn't required or even needed since it'd be Yellow by default) had the dots, so if you model prior to that, that stencil wouldn't be on the car.  If the car ever had any repainting done after the early 80's it likely would have been painted over and they often wore off after not too terribly many years anyways.
