Well, figured I'd steal one of the USAF's old recruiting slogans...

I've been looking for some of the older Conrail Atlas stuff in N without the Quality logo.  Only a few shops have them.  Just for grins I checked out Caboose in Denver (I've had good luck with them in the past) and the website claims to have some of that good stuff.

So, I'm taking the plunge, or "Crossing into Big Blue," using part of the "stimulus package" we got from the IRS and went shopping on line last night.  Here's the order:

1 x 90 TON HOPPER Conrail 490448
Manufacturer: Atlas Model Railroad Co Inc

1 x ACF RIBSIDE BOXCAR Conrail 166721

I'm waiting for the order to be processed - let's see if any of this stuff is actually in stock!

I sure hope Atlas does another run of non-Quality logo rolling stock.  The Q-logo is really only appropriate for the last 6 years or so of Conrail's 23-year history.  But since it still rolls today, I understand the appeal.

Thats a good start Dave, the GP38-2 is a good choice for power..

I was thinking of pairing the blue GP38-2 with a black GP38 PC paint-out for variety.  How common (or not) was it to pair the 38 & 38-2?

I think the Quality logo started in 1991 - I know that I saw the first quality locos (c40-8W) right around the time I was married - so that pins the date pretty well!

Only 200 90ton hoppers to go!  PRR Yellow Balls, CR, RDG, EL, PC... Oh you're going to have so much fun!

Cool!  I wasn't sure when it started...  I thought I'd read '93 somewhere but that might just have been a date that something got painted with it.  1991 means the q-logo lasted 8 years...  nearly 1/3 of Conrail's existance.

Oh, and Lee, you know the gears are tunring on PRR, PC, RDG, and EL cars...  Woohoo!

Still waiting for mine.....it wasn't direct deposited because of the TurboTax/H&R Block direct deposit fiasco....so now I have to wait until the 2nd week of June :'(  Had that money planned out for a lot of track for the layout, and it was also paying for my speeder weekend at the end of the month. Oh well!

Dave, I don't know for sure, but having lived along the CR main line from 1977-1984, I can tell you that practically any mix of motive power was possible. IIRC CR tended to put six axle units together and four axle units together, but beyond that you were likely to see anything.

I did it too..I ordered a bunch of Atlas 90 ton hoppers in CR...they were just so cheap I couldn't let them there and my SD45 will get a sister this weekend...a good friend asked me if I want it cause he means that it would be unprototypical on UP trains...mkay  ;D  price:30€  8)
But I have to have a hard look on me...I'll tell other people that this CR coal train detours over my BNWSOR-layout because there was a derailment...very serious derailment..mkay

You can be happy that I'm not good at photoshop..I just imagined a blue CR diesel with WM lettering...
Any ideas how to change numbers on those Atlas coal hoppers?...I also have a BN unit coal train with 80 cars so far (runs periodically on our club layout)...so it should be very simple,easy and low cost...
