Looks like a Fairbanks-Morse opposed piston diesel to me. ???

Didn't Fairbanks-Morse make engines for ships as well as locomotives?

Yes, and they still do.
Same engines, they were in marine use prior to railway locomotives.

True as far as MSRP goes the price vs what's provided go together, but really, these huge loads just sitting there on the car, its not just this MT load, but so many others. No chains, no tie downs, no wood all around it (can't remember, there's a name for that). Its just so atypical.

Yes, but all that would have to be done by hand, and in MTL's case, here in the USA. It would drive the cost of the car and load through the roof and then we'd all be complaining about that.

Actually, the railroad terms are "dunnage" and "blocking and bracing". These are covered by specific open car loading rules. I got lucky some time back when Richard Hendrickson copied the 1935 AAR rules and sold copies for $13.00.

The MTL "engine" would not only require extensive wooden blocking and bracing, but probably steel strapping or rod as well.
